Campaigners told theipaper there is a suspicion that a perceived association among police between hip-hop/grime and Afrobeat shows and crowd violence is a factor in the Met’s hostility to the venue reopenin adamsherwin10 reports:
Mr Collins said: “The local bars, restaurants, taxis and kebab shops, they are all missing vital income. For many people, going to the Academy was their first ever visit to Brixton.”
There are also fears huge acts from across the genres may never be discovered if the Academy closes its doors for good. “Playing Brixton is a vital part of the career trajectory for artists like Sheeran,” Mr Collins said. “It’s a stepping stone on the path from playing pubs and clubs to graduating to arenas and global domination.”
