LAST SUMMER, The Voice spoke with young fencing sensation, Oghenegaren Esiovwa-Thompson, who had his eyes...

Oghenegaren Esiovwa-Thompson's ambitions have strengthened after recently being crowned under-14 national championspoke with young fencing sensation, Oghenegaren Esiovwa-Thompson, who had his eyes set on Olympic gold.

We also went to Poland and he had a narrow loss to an older fencer. Then there was an international tournament in Birmingham, that went well, but again it was a learning experience. They were a lot older, 25 years and upwards. We just did Croatia this month as well, a narrow defeat there, finished sixth out of 80 fencers.

I’m feeling much more confident at Brixton, and I think I’m getting much better. My opponents are getting better but I am as well, and I am getting more confident as time progresses. His next competition is representing England in Bulgaria, then a competition in Switzerland and then the EYC which is a competition to decide the best in England. Then after that we are going to look to move him up to a higher age category and push him on.

I think I have surpassed my competition, so I am looking forward to fencing in an older age category. I think I have more drive nowThere’s a lot of shouting. In England, they say you’re not allowed to shout, but in Europe, it’s like going to a football match, it’s a good experience because you have to be really focussed and cut the noise out.English fencers are more defensive, international fencers won’t hide, if they see an opening, they will go for it, so it’s probably tougher.
