Fentanyl, seen here after being seized by Customs and Border Protection officers in Nogales, Ariz., is a synthetic opioid 80 to 100 times more potent than morphine.The amount of fentanyl confiscated at U.S. ports and borders skyrocketed this summer to more than one ton in July, up from 700 pounds in June.
That’s why we support the Dallas’ participation in a national program that provides near real-time mapping of overdoses. Pinpointing where overdoses are occurring would allow police and health care workers to direct their efforts in ways that make the biggest difference. If several overdoses occur on the same college campus, for example, police and community health agencies could warn the school of what they are seeing, virtually when they are seeing it, to spread the word that perhaps a so-called “bad batch” of painkillers or Adderall has been found in the area.
