In the wake of a federal lawsuit against Hilliard City Schools over LGBTQ issues, The Dispatch surveyed local schools to see what policies they have.
Columbus City Schools, Bexley City Schools and Westerville City Schools are the only Franklin County school districts to have an entire section of their school board policy dedicated to gender identity, transgender students, or preferred names and pronouns.
Hilliard City Schools Superintendent David Stewart said while this was not a practice adopted by the district or even a majority of its teachers, when he became aware of it, he told the administration that Hilliard City Schools does not endorse the practice. Their policy says it is the student’s responsibility to determine their gender identity, but it is up to the parents or guardians in the case of a young student who is “not yet able to advocate for themselves.”
The district is required to have a permanent pupil record of each student that has the student’s legal name and gender assigned at birth, according to the policy.
