to enhance the presence of sculptors and women in Wikipedia.
As one of the internet’s most frequently visited reference sites, Wikipedia serves as a starting point for many interested in learning about art, history, and the lives of artists. Yet many women artists whose important works are displayed in museums and galleries around the world have incomplete Wikipedia articles or no article at all. Sculptors are even less represented than painters in Wikipedia, increasing the likelihood of women sculptors being excluded. This problem can be corrected.
During this event, attendees of all experience levels will learn the basics of how to edit Wikipedia by creating or updating articles related to the history of fifty women sculptural artists in the United States. This event is cohosted by the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Smithsonian American Women’s History Initiative. No Wikipedia editing experience is necessary; training will be provided. No background in art history is required.
