Matthew McCombe died in a tragic accident in 2020 while on holiday in Amsterdam celebrating his 21st birthday

Three years on from his tragic death, Billy McNeill’s grandson Matthew McCombe was remembered on an "emotional" charity walk.

Incredibly, the remembrance fundraiser has raised a whopping £18,000 for three causes close to their hearts. The Billy McNeill Commemoration Committee, which drives the health and sporting ambitions of disadvantaged young people in the local area, will benefit from the donations, along with two Dutch charities which the family say were “indispensable” in the ensuing search for Matthew.

“He would always seek to include everyone, despite any differences a person might have had with him or anyone else in a group. That demonstrating, in a nutshell, the unwavering kind-heartedness and magnanimity that Matt carried himself with. Paula, who is the late Lisbon Lion Billy McNeill’s daughter, had also begged the ‘Celtic family’ to help find her missing son.

He explained: “Away he went to the shops, but he’s took a wrong turn and went up a street called Amsteldijk, then five minutes later he comes down.
