But it took 77 minutes for officers to enter the classroom and kill the shooter. The report describes the scene as “chaotic” with no person “obviously in charge or directing law enforcement response.”
“This was not a training issue. This was not an equipment issue. This was a commitment issue,” Perdue said. The Texas Department of Public Safety has already formed an internal committee to review the response on May 24. The purpose is to “determine if any violations of policy, law, or doctrine occurred and where the department can make necessary improvements for future mass casualty responses,” per a statement to Spectrum News.“There are some people that are in this profession for the wrong reasons, and they probably shouldn’t be in this profession,” he said.
In a statement released Monday, Gov. Greg Abbott said he will begin working with the Texas legislature to improve public safety, school safety, and mental health assessment and treatment. But he has yet to address gun reform.
