The Taoiseach has said it is challenging to provide the right accommodation for people staying in tented accommodation in Co Clare during sub-zero conditions. Mr Martin said the services are 'continuing to work to see what we can do in relation to that' |
Speaking specifically about those staying in tented accommodation in Co Clare during sub-zero conditions overnight, Micheál Martin said the services are"continuing to work to see what we can do in relation to that".
The Irish Refugee Council expressed"shock and dismay" that some people are still sleeping in tented accommodation in Knockalisheen. He said"cold weather has been in the forecast for many days" and what many had predicted with regard to this accommodation has materialised,"a short term measure slipped from summer to autumn and then the cold of winter."
Mr Lannon said it is expected that this will be moved to different accommodation today but they are not aware of where, or what, this new setting is. Director of Jesuit Refugee Service Eugene Quinn said some of the men in Knockalisheen"barely slept" last night during the sub-zero temperatures. He said his understanding is that 10 of the international protection applicants were due to leave the facility yesterday to alternative accommodation, but this was cancelled due to bad weather conditions. He wishes there had been a contingency plan put in place by the Government to ensure no one was in this setting during sub zero temperatures as he referred to the possible damage to their health and well-being, he added.
She acknowledged that the State is dealing with"unprecedented circumstances" and that is why these temporary measures are extending"well beyond where they should be".She believes a two-tier system is in existence with regard to those seeking international protection, but said it is not too late to resist it.She said part of that is the State taking on a responsibility to combat racism and be more proactive in handling the current situation.
