But observers said Fine Gael’s John Mullins, the former Bord Gáis chief executive, or Fianna Fáil’s Cynthia Ní Mhurchú, the former RTÉ presenter, could also be in the fight for the last seat depending on which one was eliminated first and whether they transferred votes to their Coalition partner’s second candidate.
One notable feature of the voting was the large number of voters giving first preferences to Kelly and their second preference to Kelleher or vice versa, suggesting candidate recognition was a major factor.Wallace, the Independent from Wexford, remains in the hunt for the last seat with the Green Party’s O’Sullivan growing in confidence of holding her seat as counting went on last night.
Ireland South returning officer Martin Harvey is overseeing the counting of the 713,000 ballot papers, which weigh in at a hefty 5.8 metric tonnes. The count is due to resume at 9am on Monday.Fine Gael’s Seán Kelly and Fianna Fáil’s Billy Kelleher in running to take first seats in Ireland South
