As Saban’s dynasty endures, UT ponders the unknown
FILE - Alabama head coach Nick Saban leaves the field after their win against Ohio State in an NCAA College Football Playoff national championship game in Miami Gardens, Fla., in this Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2021, file photo. Another college football season will start with everyone chasing the Tide. Alabama is No. 1 in The Associated Press Top 25 preseason college football poll released Monday, Aug. 16, 2021. Almost a decade ago, rich men in Texas saw Tuesday coming.
Then came the annual Longhorns football banquet, for which dozens of donors filed into the Erwin Center half-expecting Brown to announce his departure. Instead, just as the event was starting, attendees looked down at their phones to see breaking news reports of Saban signing a contract extension at Alabama.
It seems safe to argue now that Saban would have won more than any of them did. But it’s quite a leap to think he could have replicated what he did at Alabama since 2013 — three national titles, six playoff berths and eight Top 10 finishes — at UT.
