Even as UTSA laments missed chance, a tradition grows

UTSA fans make fun of Houston coach Dana Holgorsen’s comments about fake noise being piped in at the Alamodome. Before the UTSA Roadrunners twice came meep-meeping back from the dead Saturday afternoon, before they ultimately fell just short of doing it again, and before a somber Jeff Traylor hurled himself into a fire of blame and self-flagellation, there was a scene at the Alamodome remarkable enough to make an old-timer laugh in wonder.

In that sense, this season will be seen by some as a step back from last year’s 11-0 start that vaulted the Roadrunners into the Associated Press poll and the mainstream college football consciousness. But that’s a simplistic way to gauge the progress of a program trying to prove, to use another Traylor motto, that it’s “built to last.”

Before multiple key plays, the raucous onlookers were disconcerting enough to goad the Cougars into false starts, and perhaps to make Houston coach Dana Holgorsen lament his laughable game-week barbs about how UTSA supposedly pipes in fake crowd noise. In the black leather journal he carries in his pocket, Traylor scribbled a few pregame questions before kickoff. The last one was:“We already knew the answer,” Traylor said. “I just really wanted the rest of the country to know for sure. We had such a great opportunity here at the dome. And the head ball coach let it slip away.”
