Fiona Murtagh Qualifies for Women's Single Sculls Final at World Rowing Championships

Ireland's Fiona Murtagh has secured her place in the women's single sculls final at the World Rowing Championships following a spectacular performance in Amsterdam. Fintan McCarthy, another Irish rower, missed out on the A final of the men's single sculls, while the women's four crew finished seventh overall and the women's quad secured ninth place.

Ireland's Fiona Murtagh has qualified for the women's single sculls final at the World Rowing Championships in Amsterdam after a strong performance. The Galwegian rower came from under pressure to win her semi-final in 7:24.68 after appearing fourth at the 500m mark and third at the halfway stage.

Murtagh, who was four seconds adrift of the leader at one stage, gradually increased her stroke rate to pass Switzerland's Aurelia-Maxima Janzen and then overtake the Serbian sculler before the end of the semi-final. This impressive performance sets up a rematch between Murtagh and Britain's Lauren Henry, her opponent in the 2025 world final where she edged over the line in a photo finish.

Meanwhile, Fintan McCarthy, another Irish rower, missed out on the A final of the men's single sculls, settling for fourth place in his semi-final. The Skibbereen sculler moved from the lightweight to the open-weight category but finished in 6:55.45, almost 10 seconds behind the German winner Oliver Zeidler, and narrowly missed out on a spot in the final.

On a more positive note, Ireland's women's four crew of Claire Feerick, Aisling Hayes, Emma Waters, and Emma Fagan secured seventh place overall at the championships after winning their B final in 6:26.34. Additionally, the Irish women's quad boat of Izzy Clements, Sophia Young, Alison Bergin, and Emily Hegarty took third place in their B final and finished ninth overall after being beaten by five seconds by the winners.

These results showcase the dedication and hard work of Ireland's rowing athletes as they strive for success on the international stage
