Fire chiefs are calling for people to not have barbecues in their gardens ahead of another spell of extremely hot weather

The Environment Secretary George Eustice has urged more water companies to impose hosepipe bans as Britain braces for another heatwave. Temperatures are going to ramp up again this week, with 35C by Friday and the prospect of another 40C day.

Kent Fire and Rescue service regional manager Neil Fenwick said: “We’re strongly discouraging people from having any kinds of fires at the moment.” "In making those judgments, companies use specific indicators and criteria set out in the plans agreed with government. "But reducing demand is just one way that companies are helping the environment - for example, they have also been sending pulses of cold water from reservoirs to rehydrate and cool down rivers to protect fish , and are choosing their sources of water in a way that tries to alleviate as much pressure as possible on hot-spot areas of low river flows."

The west of Scotland may see some rain - but will also experience patches of clear sky, according to forecasters. "Maximum temperatures tomorrow will be around 27 and possibly 28C which would be across central and southern and southeast England area. The dry conditions look set to clash with hosepipe bans already imposed or due to be announced - with more firms likely to follow suit after the Environment Secretary's intervention.
