A huge plume can be seen from miles away

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service is urging people to stay away from a 'horrendous' fire at an industrial site. An estimated 1,000 tyres are on fire at the site in Ranskill, near Retford, where nine fire engines were called to at about 10.20am on Friday, August 5.

The crews were joined by Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service in their efforts to tackle the fire. Many residents in the area and neighbouring villages are concerned about the large smoke plume from the fire. The service has warned people to avoid the area and to close their windows and doors if they see or smell smoke. A spokesperson from Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue said: "We're aware that large groups of the public are gathering near this fire."Please stay away from the area for your own safety as crews continue to arrive and tackle the fire. Large quantities of smoke are issuing from the scene.

She said: "It's unbelievable, I've never seen anything like it. I've watched it now since about quarter to eleven and it's just getting bigger and worse.Theresa also expressed concern about the horses in the field nearby and what people could potentially be breathing in from the smoke. Due to the size of the smoke plume, dark smoke from the fire can be seen across Ranskill and neighbouring villages.
