“The message needs to be clear to the public: It is still illegal to discharge those fireworks in the city of Cleveland,” Cleveland City Council President Blaine Griffin said. “The issue now is communication, and making sure there’s no ambiguity.”
Despite changes to Ohio law, the city of Cleveland intends to keep rules in place that ban individuals from setting off consumer-grade fireworks, though professional displays would still be allowed. A new state law goes into effect July 1 allowing residents to shoot off consumer-grade fireworks in places that haven't enacted local bans.
Mayor Justin Bibb had hoped to make some changes to the current ban ahead of July 1, when a new state law goes into effect allowing Ohioans to shoot fireworks off on certain holidays, including the Fourth of July. But those changes failed to win approval from City Council before it went on summer break, and no council meetings are scheduled prior to Independence Day.
