Two regional Independents celebrated their colleague's victory in the election for Ceann Comhairle , the first woman to hold the office. Verona Murphy, the Independent TD for Wexford, was elected as the 21st Ceann Comhairle in the history of the State. After the result of the secret ballot was announced, Murphy expressed the historic and emotional significance of the occasion. Following the announcement, Murphy was escorted by public servants and ushers to her office for official photographs.
