The River Wye’s world-famous reputation for fishing has seen anglers flocking to its banks for decades - but pollution, drought and record-breaking heat has left dead salmon floating down the river

, which has seen river levels plunge, combined with pollution levels, has seen dozens of dead salmon found by local fishermen.this had been the worst year he could remember on the Wye for local salmon, describing it as a “car crash”.

Water levels in the River Wye dropped significantly due to the recent heatwave with river levels in some areas lower than in 1976, when its waters passed the critical 27°C temperature and thousands of fish died Up to 1,000 fish suffocated in an oxygen-starved Kent lake. Announcing the “catastrophic” news about Fordwich Lake on Facebook page the Freshwater Informer, local angler Ray Long wrote: “It has killed more than likely all the stock.”

The Angling Trust has urged the Government to act over the “crisis” that is causing “fish and other wildlife suffering”, and called for immediate hosepipe bans in affected areas earlier this month. Salmon stocks across the UK are “dropping like a stone” and have been for some time according to Dave Throup, a former Environment Agency manager.“There are a whole range of reasons for that, some of which are local and some of which is stuff happening at sea,” he said. “The heatwave stuff is just another nail in the coffin.”

Fisheries officers from the Environment Agency rescue fish from a drying pool of the River Mole by Pressforward Bridge, before moving them to a deeper area of the River Mole in Norbury Park, Dorking, Surrey, as ongoing dry weather and hot temperatures have led to impacts on wildlife and ecology across the UK

A second consecutive dry winter this year going into 2023 on the back of this year’s heatwave could spell disaster for local salmon, which are a “species on the edge”, Mr Throup says.
