Last year's finalists Mary Immaculate College and University of Limerick both kicked off their Fitzgibbon Cup campaigns with victories. UCC, the record holders, also triumphed over UCD, while UL secured a comfortable win against SETU Waterford.
Last year's finalists, Mary Immaculate College and University of Limerick, both secured winning starts to their Fitzgibbon Cup campaigns. Reigning champions UCC also made a strong opening, defeating UCD by six points, 0-29 to 1-20, at the Mardyke. The Leesiders dominated the final 21 minutes, outscoring their opponents 0-15 to 1-3.
UCC, missing several key players including Colm and Cathal McCarthy, Luke Elliott, Daniel Hogan, and Eoin Downey, showcased a balanced attack with 12 different scorers. Brian Keating, the brilliant Ballincollig midfielder, led the way with five points. The game was closely contested, with ten ties before UCC's decisive surge. UCD, led by David Williams' three points and Diarmaid Ó Dúlaing's five from frees, held a 0-13 to 0-12 half-time advantage. William Buckley came close to scoring UCC's only goal chance, hitting the crossbar. Defensively, UCC was solid with Michael Mullaney (0-3), Timmy Wilk (0-2), Ethan Twomey, and James Dwyer chipping in with points. In the second half, Cian Ó Cathasaigh helped UCD extend their lead to three points, but UCC responded with a seven-point streak, fueled by three from Keating and two Ben Cunningham frees from inside his own half. Despite Thomastown's Luke Connellan's 55th minute goal, which closed the gap to one point, UCC continued their strong finish, scoring the next three points and ultimately securing a comfortable victory. Meanwhile, defending champions Mary I emerged victorious from a tight encounter against ATU Galway, winning by two points, 0-22 to 2-14. Mary I, with Oisín O’Farrell contributing 0-5 among 11 different scorers, led 0-12 to 0-10 at half-time. However, ATU Galway rallied in the second half, taking a three-point lead before Darragh Donohoe added eight frees. Mary I, boosted by Young Hurler of the Year Adam Hogan's introduction from the bench, responded with a crucial seven-point run, ultimately securing the win despite a late goal from Darren O’Shaughnessy. At UL, the home side recorded a convincing victory over SETU Waterford, winning by 3-24 to 1-17. The first half saw all four goals scored, with Jack Leahy opening the scoring before Ruben Halloran, who finished with 1-10, put SETU Waterford ahead. UL quickly responded with Adam English finding the net, followed by Leahy's second goal, giving them a 3-9 to 1-10 half-time lead. Despite English's departure due to injury, UL continued to dominate, extending their lead for a comfortable 13-point win.
