Five alleged Hezbollah armed group members charged with murder of Irish soldier Sean Rooney
Lebanese authorities have now formally charged five alleged members of the Hezbollah armed group with the murder of Private Seán Rooney, it has emerged,
The suspect, named by Lebanese media as Muhammad Ayyad, has allegedly confessed to shooting Pte Rooney in the head with a Kalsahnikov assault rifle. Judge Sawan has alleged the five men formed a gang to carry out an attack on the UN armoured jeep that Pte Rooney was driving. Among the three soldiers who survived the ambush was Shane Kearney, from Killeagh in Co Cork, who suffered serious head injuries when the car crashed and overturned when Private Rooney was killed.
It’s understood the jeeps got separated and Private Rooney, a specialist driver, was trying to re-join the second car when his jeep was surrounded by the mob.At least one of the bullets hit him in the head after penetrating the armour in the cart and smashing through his headrest.
