The end finally came in 2017, with the arrival of Evangelos Marinakis representing a fresh start. Since then, the Reds have been on a surer footing. Signing Italian trio David Platt was handed around £12m to spend by Nigel Doughty after becoming manager, but proved adept at wasting almost all of it. He did bring in David Johnson for £3m from Ipswich Town, although the striker only got going when Platt left in 2001.
