Workers’ Memorial Day: Older workers disproportionately represented in workplace injury figures

The number of fatalities in 2022 was the lowest since records began 30 years ago but workplace safety remains a major issue with the number of incidents currently on the rise. In the first three months of 2023, there were 2,162 cases of work-related illness or injury reported in Ireland, an increase of 2.95 per cent on the 2,100 reported incidents during the same period in 2022.

Irish Congress of Trade Unions General Secretary Owen Reidy says the issue of workplace fatalities and injuries is something that can be effectively addressed through better communication and procedures. Older workers are disproportionately represented in the figures, something the HSA identifies as a particular issue given the growing age profile of the country’s workforce.
