The new-look Allianz Hurling League has much greater jeopardy attached this year.
Generally, the Allianz Football League has the weekend to itself when getting underway in late January - but it shared the bill with its hurling counterpart this year.
However, there is significant jeopardy in the fact that two teams will be automatically relegated from each division, unlike previous years where one team out of the top 12 made the drop, meaning that the top dogs weren’t in any danger whatsoever. Well, it was Tipp that got that, and then some. Even though they won by 12 points, the margin probably wasn’t a reflection of their superiority on the day as Galway got in for two cheap goals late on in what was a worrying start for Micheal Donoghue in his return to the hotseat.
For Galway, while the last week in January is no time to make declarations, the result underlines the rebuilding job that is at hand for Donoghue, having inherited a seasoned team that required mostly fine-tuning during his first stint. It’s a peculiarity of the League that a manager can be reasonably chirpy on the back of a defeat, not that Clare boss Brian Lohan is ever particularly jolly in any circumstances.
Of course, a spate of more familiar faces will be on the field by the time things get really serious but, on Sunday’s evidence at Cusack Park, Clare may well be developing a panel of greater depth ahead of their All-Ireland defence.Cork were always likely to have too much for a depleted Wexford but the comfort with which they dealt with them was impressive all the same as they dished out a 15-point drubbing.
