Stormont parties have disputed issues over flags in Northern Ireland for years without finding consensus

The banning of flags from new-build housing developments through a legal clause inserted into homeowner contracts has received a mixed reaction from politicians.

Alliance South Belfast MLA Paula Bradshaw said her party was focused on addressing concerns over flags on public property instead of private land. TUV's Lorna Smyth, an Assembly election candidate for the party in May in the Lagan Valley constituency, expressed her disapproval over the flags covenant.UUP East Belfast councillor Jim Rodgers questioned how the clause would be enforced by property management companies when builders finish a new housing development."The big problem is, and people have complained to me about flags and wanting to take action, but people are risking life and limb to go up ladders and take down flags.

He said: "People put flags up then they don't take them down, they end up in tatters and it's just unsightly. It brings down an area and puts people off moving into it whenever they see things like that happen."

New sickle cell disease gene therapies depend on getting the right mouseNew sickle cell disease gene therapies depend on getting the right mouseSickle cell disease is an extremely debilitating condition that affects up to 40% of the population in African countries, with patients suffering episodes of excruciating pain, organ damage and reduced life expectancy. This disease is caused by a mutation in a gene that makes hemoglobin, the protein that carries oxygen in red blood cells, with the damaged hemoglobin distorting the shape of red blood cells, causing painful and potentially life-threatening blockages in blood vessels. However, scientists have realized that increasing the production of a healthy form of this protein (fetal hemoglobin, which is usually only produced when we are in the womb), could provide a revolutionary treatment for these patients.
