Police boarded the flight to remove the passenger amid local reports she allegedly assaulted crew and other passengers

A woman had to be removed from a Wizz Air flight on Friday evening after causing a ruckus on board, as police were called to the scene.

It is understood that the woman was drunk on the plane which was headed to Madeira's capital Funchal from Gatwick before the pilot made the decision to divert. The plane made an unscheduled touchdown in the Portuguese capital just after 8:00 pm on Friday night. Videos circulating online show police boarding the flight to remove her amid local reports she had allegedly assaulted crew and other passengers. The nationality of the woman involved in the incident is not yet known, however, the incident resulted in a six-hour delay for everyone else on board.

Funchal-based paper Jornal da Madeira, quoted a Portuguese passenger it had spoken to while the plane was still on the tarmac at Lisbon's Humberto Delgado Airport, as saying: “We were diverted to Lisbon because of a drunk female passenger who began to assault other passengers.“We were informed after police boarded that the plane was due to leave Lisbon just after midnight when it was supposed to have arrived at 9.25 pm.
