Flo’s Brit Award feels particularly significant because of how groups like them have been dismissed in the past ✒️ _emilybootle
In the 1990s and 2000s, there was a sense that because this type of group was usually put together by industry professionals, rather than forming “organically”, they were somehow less credible as artists than bands who taught themselves their instruments and struggled for years playing in dingy basements.Britain’s Got Talent
Now, we have not only experienced the breakthrough of “poptimism”, in which popular culture is celebrated as being worthy of critical attention, but are generally much better informed on how pop music works. The discerning listener knows that however a band is formed, the pop music industry is a commercial operation – and, for better or worse, an artists’ origins are perhaps less important than how their output makes us, the consumers, feel.
Part of the reason Flo work so well together is that their connection to one another feels authentic – and it’s this spirit of collectiveness that makes the girl band in general so appealing. Although the group’s members will each bring something individually – a model that finds its platonic ideal in Baby, Ginger, Scary, Sporty and Posh – it is their togetherness that creates something special.
