Shadow Defra Secretary, Jim McMahon, said: “Not only did No 10 propose price controls without talking to industry, they’ve not even done their homework.

“Labour would tackle the costs of food production. We’d cut energy bills for domestic food manufacturers and processors with a fund for energy intensive industries, paid for by a proper windfall tax on oil and gas giants.” However, ambient food inflation – that is to say shelf-stable items that can be stored at room temperature – rose from 12.9 per cent in April to 13.1 per cent in May.
