Listeria can be extremely unpleasant and even dangerous to vulnerable groups and consumers are being advised not to consume the meats if they have purchased an affected batch
The Food Safety Authority of Ireland have issued a major recall of lunchtime staples due to the risk of a potentially "severe" infection.
In a statement on their website, the FSAI wrote: "Dale Meats is recalling all batches of Sliced Cooked Ham, Hazlett and Sliced Corned Beef with a use-by-date up to 31/08/2024 due to the presence of Listeria monocytogenes. They also warned of the dangers of Listeria : "Symptoms of Listeria monocytogenes infection can include mild flu-like symptoms, or gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. In rare cases, the infection can be more severe, causing serious complications.
Listeriosis is a serious infection usually caused by eating food contaminated with the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. An estimated 1,600 people get listeriosis each year, and about 260 die. The infection is most likely to sicken pregnant women and their newborns, adults aged 65 or older, and people with weakened immune systems.
