There are also cultural pressures at home: “Sometimes Dominican culture very much pushes traditional gender roles, which are honestly ridiculous. They expect girls to do the cooking and cleaning, even when we’re kids,” Jailani says. “ I don’t want to be expected to clean while the men sit and play video games, I don’t want kids, and I don’t want to wear dresses all the time.
