The two Republican members of Harris County Commissioners Court have announced they will skip a special meeting Monday to discuss a compromise tax rate proposal by Precinct 2 Commissioner Adrian Garcia, reversing the position they took Friday.
The county attorney's office confirmed Friday afternoon that the purpose of the meeting was for court members to have a discussion and that no final vote on a tax rate could occur. In a statement, Cagle said, “I have read that Commissioner Adrian Garcia is now calling his most recent tax increase proposal his ‘final offer.’ There can be no good-faith negotiations with someone who announces publicly that he has made his final offer. In addition, Commissioner Tom S.
After Ramsey's announcement Saturday, County Attorney Christian Menefee issued a statement disputing the commissioner's complaint that the agenda item was too vague. Cagle spokesman Joe Stinebaker said the commissioner still did not trust the court not to take a vote. In response, Menefee said in a statement: “I do not believe Commissioners Ramsey and Cagle were actually concerned about being tricked into providing a quorum for a tax rate to be passed at today’s meeting, or about a quorum at today’s meeting somehow transferring to tomorrow’s meeting. These are unserious claims that I’ve personally told them could not happen, as a matter of Texas law.”
Garcia's plan calls for an additional $20 million to hire 200 additional law enforcement officers, echoing Ramsey's call for 200 additional law enforcement"boots on the ground." It also includes a 2.5 percent pay increase for law enforcement officers. Jack Morillo said insufficient funding for the Harris County Pollution Control Department would be dangerous for his neighborhood.
