On paper, Meloni appears as a surprisingly inspirational figure for the modern woman. She is an unmarried working mother and was raised by a single mother. She has spoken about gender inequality during her career, such as being forced to withdraw from the race for mayor of Rome when she was pregnant. Now she has broken barriers as she prepares to be Italy’s first female premier.

. I worry that this will legitimise greater discrimination towards women in daily life and even violence if women aren’t seen to fit into their assigned gender roles.
