The father of one was a native of Killorglin in County Kerry
The former Laune Rangers player was involved in a two-vehicle collision in the Beaufort area on Sunday afternoon. He was the driver and only occupant of one of the vehicles.
Mr Cahill, 52, skippered his county's minors to victory in the All-Ireland final at Croke Park in 1988 when they beat Dublin - the first Laune Rangers clubman to captain Kerry to championship success.He was centre-forward in the team that beat a Dublin team including Brian Stynes and Dessie Farrell 2-05 to 0-5, and went on to enjoy great success with his Killorglin-based club.
He is survived by his wife Sarah, daughter Lucy and parents Mattie and Hannah and extended family. Funeral arrangements will be announced later. In a statement yesterday, a Garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí in Killarney are investigating a fatal road traffic collision involving two vehicles that occurred in Kilbonnane, Beaufort, Co. Kerry at approximately 1:10pm this afternoon Sunday 25th June, 2023."His body was removed from the scene to the mortuary in University Hospital Kerry where a post mortem will be conducted in due course.
"The male driver of the second vehicle was removed from the scene to University Hospital Kerry where he remains in critical condition."The road is currently closed as an examination by Forensic Collision Investigators is currently ongoing.
