With the move, Mayfield will battle Sam Darnold for the Panthers’ starting QB job. Assuming Mayfield wins that position competition, the Browns will face their former starter in Carolina on Sept. 11 during the season opener. If Watson is suspended for violating the NFL’s Personal Conduct Policy, Mayfield will likely face Browns backup Jacoby Brissett.
Mayfield comes to Carolina after struggling throughout 2021. He suffered a torn labrum in his left shoulder in Week 2 and fell to 27th in the NFL with an 83.1 rating. Midway through the season, he endured the Odell Beckham Jr. saga, in which Beckham’s father shared a video of Mayfield consistently missing an open Beckham or misfiring.
“It wasn’t just the shoulder injury, the left shoulder, he also had a foot injury, a rib injury,” Carolina GM Scott Fitterer told reporters in his presser. “He was really good in 2020. He had some good tape early in his career. Last year was just a down year for him. They came into 2021 with Super Bowl expectations, but the season quickly derailed with Mayfield’s poor play as the Browns went 8-9 and missed the playoffs.
Mayfield continued to stress that he still appreciates the relationships he developed in Cleveland during that run, despite how things ended.
