Former Fine Gael TD Kate O’Connell has said Leo Varadkar ’s departure as leader was the "end of a dark enough chapter in my life”.

Asked by the Irish Mirror about her reaction to Mr Varadkar’s departure, she said that she was “surprised” and “shocked for him personally”. Several party members at the Fine Gael Ard Fheis told Ms O’Connell it was “good to have her back" as she posed for photographs with Mr Harris. “The fact that I have a good personal relationship with Simon Harris, I worked with Simon very closely throughout my time in the Dáil.”She said when there is a “positive vibe”, people may be drawn to the party but said that it was “hard to know” if people could be tempted to rejoin the party.The former Dublin Bay TD South TD did not rule out running in the general election, but said she is not considering a local election bid.
