A former Meta director claims the company could eliminate dangerous content within six months but chooses not to for profit reasons.
A former Meta employee has alleged that the company is deliberately failing to shield children from harmful and violent content. Arturo Bejar, who previously served as the director of engineering for protect and care at Meta , stated that Meta , founded by tech billionaire Mark Zuckerberg , could eliminate dangerous material from its platforms within six months.
Bejar, who was directly involved in online moderation during his tenure at Meta, emphasized that the company has the capability to create a safer environment for teenagers. He explained that implementing changes to combat pornography, violence, and self-harm content would only require a six-month timeframe. He also pointed out that addressing unwanted advances directed at children is as simple as flagging the messages, without the need for formal reporting. Bejar expressed his belief that Meta's recent policy shifts, which he claims have weakened protections for vulnerable individuals, are driven by a desire to prioritize profits over user safety. He recounted his previous testimony before Congress regarding these concerns and highlighted Meta's alleged efforts to obstruct legislative attempts to enhance online safety. He cited an example of a bill that passed through the Senate with a substantial majority but ultimately failed to reach the floor due to Meta's alleged lobbying efforts
