Clara, Co Offaly, native spent a year in hospital, after suffering a bleed on the brain four years ago
He admitted that his stay in hospital felt like a “long time”.
“The type of stroke I had, unfortunately, as I was told later, three out of four don’t make it. Even out of the one of four that remain many of them don’t recover to the extent they were before [the stroke]. It was a pretty serious situation.” Mr Cowen said that he has been able to get his “conversation back” after the stroke - but his physical recovery has been slower.“I’m able to walk about albeit slowly. I’m not totally 100 percent but I’m getting there.”
