Alabama Crimson Tide Offensive Coordinator Bill O'Brien looks on prior to a game against the Georgia Bulldogs in the 2022 CFP National Championship Game at Lucas Oil Stadium on Jan. 10, 2022 in Indianapolis, Indiana.A little more than two years after the Texans fired him, Bill O'Brien is headed back to the NFL and will be back in a familiar spot.
. The 53-year-old O'Brien previously spent five years in New England starting as an offensive assistant before being promoted to quarterbacks coach and eventually offensive coordinator. O'Brien parlayed that successful run with Tom Brady as his quarterback into the head coaching job at Penn State where he stayed for two years before getting the Texans job where he won four AFC South titles in his first six seasons. O'Brien was fired early in the 2020 season when the Texans lost their first four games.
The Patriots spent last season without an official offensive coordinator with Bill Belichick using former defensive coordinator Matt Patricia as his primary playcaller. The Patriots offense struggled, finishing 26th in the NFL in total yards, as the team went 8-9 and missed the playoffs for just the second time in the past 14 years.
