A former high-profile criminal in Ireland , Jonathan Gill , is facing an obstruction charge in a Dublin court despite being thousands of miles away in Dubai . Gill, who was previously labeled one of Ireland 's 'top criminals,' was acquitted of tiger kidnapping charges in 2019. Now, he's entangled in a legal battle stemming from an alleged incident in August 2024 at the Carnegie Court Hotel in Swords, Co Dublin.
Garda Kieran McQuaid alleges that Gill refused to comply with a lawful search request under the Misuse of Drugs Act. This is a summary offense, meaning it can be tried in the district court. Gill's defense attorney, Annette Kealy, informed the court that her client was unable to attend the hearing in Balbriggan due to a medical condition, deep vein thrombosis, preventing him from flying. However, the court presenter argued that Gill had flown to Abu Dhabi on February 8th, knowing the court date was scheduled for February 11th, and his flight was not due to return until after the hearing. Despite the conflicting information regarding Gill's medical condition and travel plans, Judge Cephas Power decided not to issue a bench warrant for his arrest at this time. The judge acknowledged that Gill was now aware of his new hearing date in April and that his counsel was present in court. Gill had previously requested CCTV footage from the hotel, claiming it would support his defense in the obstruction charge case. However, the court presenter stated that there was no mention of CCTV discs in the evidence summary. Meanwhile, Gill's past involvement with serious criminal activities, including the 2011 'tiger kidnapping' case, has cast a shadow over his current legal proceedings. Although he was acquitted of those charges, he was widely considered one of Ireland's most dangerous criminals by law enforcement
