In a bizarre turn of events, a former UK adviser to David Cameron has entered the fray in California's gubernatorial election, touting populist measures and drawing attention from a prominent Republican.
Hilton, a former bezzie and strategy guru for former UK Prime Minister David Cameron, is running for governor of California as a Republican. He trails Xavier Becerra by 60 per cent to 38 per cent in aggregate polling.
Eric Swalwell Downfall And Populist Measures
The election campaign was notable for the downfall of Democrat candidate Eric Swalwell due to sexual abuse allegations. Hilton won 26 per cent of the overall vote in the primary, leaving him neck and neck with Becerra. He has promised tax cuts, lower gas prices, and other populist measures, claiming that Becerra would extend the demise of the state under Democratic governors.
Becerra, on the other hand, is a classic immigrant story, the son of Mexican parents who arrived in California with just $12. He has sought to link Hilton to Donald Trump, his presidential endorsement and previous hosting role on a Fox News talkshow. Despite his outsider status, Hilton has a Hollywood-like story, having moved from the UK to California with his wife and built a successful career, attracting the attention of Trump and Murdoch.
Lack Of US Understanding And Debate Lines
However, a basic analysis suggests a fundamental lack of understanding of the United States by Hilton, as his phrase 'California means to America what America means to the world' is vague and open to multiple interpretations. The debate ran along expected lines, with Hilton portraying Becerra as a cog in the bureaucratic machine, while Becerra linked Hilton to Trump.
One notable moment during the debate was when Becerra reminded viewers of his own immigrant story, highlighting the stark contrast between his background and Hilton's.
