Some have objected
A plan to split Northampton’s former Woolworths store into shops and 30 apartments could get the go-ahead next week. Planning officials at West Northamptonshire Council said Fairgreen Commercial Properties Ltd’s plan for the unit at 42-48 Abington Street is “considered positive” - but some have objected.
WNC councillor Danielle Stone, whose Castle ward includes the site, said she worries the complex would lead to overdevelopment in the town centre. The authority’s housing department said the developers have not given information that 35% of the units would be designated as 'affordable', meeting WNC's target.
The work would divide the ground-floor into three units. That has formerly been used as a Woolworths and most recently a Tesco Metro.A two-storey block would have an entrance from Abington Street and would be used for 13 flats. They would include four studio flats, four one-bedroom flats, four two-bedroom flats and a one three-bedroom flat.
Another five-storey block with 17 flats would be built in a second building and its entrance would be accessible from The Ridings. That would include three studios, seven one-bedroom and seven two-bedroom flats. The two blocks would share a “very spacious” communal terrace, the developers said. They added the plan would provide good accessibility to shops and public transport, including Northampton’s train station, a short walk away.
