According to the recently released ESRB rating for Square Enix's upcoming Forspoken, the action-RPG will boast microtransactions at launch.
The ESRB rating for Square Enix's Forspoken is now live online and confirms the title will launch with microtransactions in tow. A PS5 console exclusive previously known as Project Athia, Forspoken first entered the limelight in June 2020 during Sony's PS5 reveal event. Luminous Productions, the crew responsible for Final Fantasy XV's development, leads production on the new action role-playing title, which hits digital stores and retailers later this spring in May.
Forspoken follows a New Yorker named Frey who's magically transported to the fantastical world of Athia, a land-bound to prove equal parts gorgeous and cruel. Much of the experience will revolve around Frey's attempt to return to her home in New York. However, she must also master her newfound magical abilities if she has any hope of surviving the long, treacherous journey that lies ahead.
Despite the role-playing game's forthcoming launch, the ESRB rating makes it clear that a few concrete details about Forspoken presently remain under lock and key. As such, there presently exists no word on what exactly the in-game purchases will involve. The look of the title and its menus suggests at least some microtransactions will be applied to the design of Frey's outfits. At the time of writing, Square Enix and Luminous Productions have yet to confirm as much, however.
Forspoken has an impressive amount of talent attached. For example, the writing credits alone include Uncharted creator Amy Hennig, Rogue One scribe Gary Whitta, Shadowhunters' Allison Rymer, and actor Todd Stashwick who previously worked with Hennig on Visceral Games' canceled Star Wars project. Meanwhile, Square Enix tapped The Athena and Charlie's Angels star Ella Balinska to bring protagonist Frey Holland to life.
