Four boxers have gone missing following the conclusion of the Commonwealth Games
Four Ugandan boxers have vanished in Scotland after the Commonwealth Games concluded. Team Uganda members Angel Katushabe, Nuhu Batte, Ibrahim Khemis and Emily Nakalema did not board their flight home to East Africa on Tuesday, 4 August.that the athletes plan to claim asylum while continuing their boxing ambitions in Scotland.
This isn't the first such incident - Team Uganda members also failed to return following the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia. Two Ugandan rugby sevens players, Benon Kizza and Philip Pariyo, similarly disappeared after Glasgow 2014. They subsequently claimed asylum, relocating to Cardiff where they joined a local rugby side. The 2026 Commonwealth Games wrapped up in Glasgow on Sunday, 2 July.
The event, featuring approximately 3,000 athletes representing 74 nations, saw Scotland finish fourth in the overall medal standings, reportsThe competition transformed the city for eleven days, with pop-up activities and special events hosted at Glasgow Cathedral, the City Chambers, Scotland House and the Merchant City. A Police Scotland spokesperson confirmed: "Police Scotland has received reports of several athletes who are unaccounted for. Enquiries are ongoing to assess the circumstances, and early engagement is taking place with the Home Office.
