Bárbara Lennie, Jacob Elordi, Margaret Qualley, Bono and Jun Ji-hyun feature in a quartet of movies released in the week of August 28th, 2026Directed by Pedro Almodóvar.
Starring Bárbara Lennie, Leonardo Sbaraglia, Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, Patrick Criado, Quim Gutiérrez, Milena Smit, Rossy de Palma. 15A cert, limited release, 111 min The latest from Almodóvar is a twisty metatext that lays the life of a middle-aged male film-maker beside that of the imagined female film-maker whose story will flesh out his next movie. This is the sort of puzzle that Charlie Kaufman would enjoy pulling inside out and stretching into absurd secondary shapes.
But Almodóvar is not at fully home with that level of high-end game playing. Among contemporary directors, perhaps only Wes Anderson has as recognisable a fingerprint. Lovely performances. Great Colours.
Even minor Almodóvar is worth your time. Directed by Ridley Scott. Starring Jacob Elordi, Josh Brolin, Margaret Qualley, Guy Pearce, Allison Janey, Benedict Wong. 15A cert, gen release, 118 min Brolin and Elordi enjoy an agreeable sort of apocalypse in this low-temperature adaptation of a novel by Peter Heller. The boys bond over a glass of whiskey.
Later, after a wee bit of a plane crash, Elordi makes friends with Margaret Qualley and, as the stars twinkle eternally, they cuddle around the camp fire. When The Dog Stars isn’t about very much it is perfectly watchable. When the action kicks off, however, it becomes clunky, cliched and a little ludicrous.
‘I feel guilt and rage about living in Australia while my family is in Ireland’Directed by Ian Thuillier. Featuring Guggi, Bono, Gavin Friday, Dave-iD Busaras, Gerard Mannix Flynn, Jim Sheridan. 12A cert, gen release, 78 min The Dublin-born artist Derek Rowen, christened Guggi by his U2 pal Bono, emerged from the city’s late-1970s post- punk scene as a founding member of the avant-garde band The Virgin Prunes.
Working across drawing, painting and sculpture, Guggi has exhibited in Paris, Tokyo, Buenos Aires, Los Angeles and New York. His distinctive practice is best described as the “medium of bowl”. The Wicklow-based director Ian Thuillier has filmed the artist over many years for this impressive documentary. Context does the heavy lifting.
The artists Sean Scully and Tia Thuy-Nguyen explain Guggi’s artistic significance. And Guggi himself makes for decent company. Directed by Yeon Sang-ho.
Starring Jun Ji-hyun, Koo Kyo-hwan, Ji Chang-wook, Kim Shin-rok, Shin Hyun-been, Go Soo. 16 cert, select release, 123 min Just when you think the zombie movie is dead – or too long undead – the King of Pigs director, Yeon Sang-ho, returns to the genre with Colony, a propulsive thriller channelling the claustrophobia of his 2026 hit Train to Busan into a fancy shopping mall. The late George Romero would appreciate the shiny, capitalist skyscraper wherein the zombies run riot.
The change of setting gives the director plenty of room to play with his visual instincts: luxury outlets, corridors and postmodern architecture become tight spaces for increasingly inventive eruptions of violence. Hugely entertaining. Singer-songwriter Cat Dowling dies aged 54‘Print is a great way of delivering powerful, direct messages.
