Independent senator and singer Frances Black chats to RSVP about music, her flourishing political career, addiction and why her family is so importance to her
As a shy young woman who struggled with confidence and self-image, Frances Black has come a long way since her debut solo album Talk To Me was released in 1994. Now 30 years later, she’s a singer, charity founder, senator and activist and is a passionate advocate for justice and equality.
Frances embarked on the campaign trail in 2016 and was elected, becoming the first female Independent senator from the Seanad’s panel system in the history of the state. “I think I floated out of Leinster House,” she says. “I was in shock for about six months, because I wasn’t expecting it.” Frances says that meeting her husband Brian changed her world. The quiet Corkman came into her life after her early first marriage had ended, when Eoghan and Aoife were five and three. “If it wasn’t for Brian, I don’t know where I’d be,” she says. “I certainly wouldn’t be a senator and I’m not even sure I’d be a singer. He is my rock and my world and we’re a very strong team. He supports me in every single thing that I do and I talk to him about everything.
