Frank McDonald: A Pioneering Journalist Who Made a Lasting Impact on Irish Journalism
Frank Mcdonald, Irish Journalist, Climate Change

Frank McDonald, a renowned Irish journalist and environmentalist, has passed away after a short illness. He is remembered for his pioneering reporting on climate change and his contributions to The Irish Times over the course of 36 years.

The late Frank McDonald, a renowned Irish journalist and environmentalist, left an indelible mark on the country's journalism landscape. Born in Dublin, McDonald studied history and politics at University College Dublin before embarking on a career in journalism.

He initially worked for The Irish Press, but in 1979, he joined The Irish Times, where he spent the next 36 years. McDonald's pioneering reporting on climate change earned him recognition in Irish journalism, and he regularly covered international climate negotiations from abroad. He was appointed environment editor in 2000 and authored or co-authored eight books on urban planning, architecture, and the history of Dublin.

In his memoir, Truly Frank, published in 2018, McDonald chronicled his experiences as a gay man in a country that previously discriminated against individuals of his sexuality. He married his partner of 40 years, Eamon Slater, in 2016, and the couple lived in Temple Bar, Dublin, before settling in Blackrock in 2022. McDonald continued to contribute to The Irish Times and other publications until his retirement in 2015.

He remained active in planning issues, particularly expressing concerns about the configuration of MetroLink and the potential impact on St Stephen's Green as a national monument. Frank McDonald is survived by his husband, Eamon Slater, two brothers, a sister, and a large circle of friends. His passing leaves a void in the Irish journalism community, but his legacy will continue to inspire future generations
