Eamonn Fitzmaurice, a member of the Football Review Committee (FRC) and a former Kerry boss, is optimistic that the recent rule changes approved at the GAA Special Congress will bring back the joy of playing football. The changes were overwhelmingly supported by delegates, with the smallest winning margin being 73 percent. These new rules are set to take effect before the start of the 2025 National Football League, with the possibility of further adjustments by the FRC.
Football Review Committee member and former Kerry boss Eamonn Fitzmaurice is hopeful the raft of rule changes voted in at GAA Special Congress will lead to ‘the joy of playing football’ returning.
There were very few dissenting voices on Congress floor as Jim Gavin presented the motions to delegates."In terms of attendance, in terms of interest, it certainly had declined dramatically over the last couple of years,” said Fitzmaurice. “But the actual joy of just playing football, which certainly all of us would have had a lot of, I think that was gone and I think that will be back.
“I can't wait for the bright coaches and managers to get stuck into it and to bring their own nuances and to see the best version of all of our players now. The ‘three-up’ means teams will have to keep three players in both halves of the field at all times, and although reservations were voiced about how it would be refereed at club level, it romped home.
There will also be restrictions on the goalkeeper, who can now only receive a pass in the opposition half, or from another player in his own large square.
