U.S. National Figure Skating Championships: After record-setting skate, Alexa Knierim and Brandon Frazier’s free skate will be must-see
SAN JOSE — Alexa Knierim and Brandon Frazier know time is precious in this sport. So as the music faded and the crowd stood to applaud a near-flawless short program, the pair knelt on the ice and embraced for a few extra seconds.
With their upcoming free skate performance on Saturday evening, the defending world champions are now primed to reclaim the U.S. National Figure Skating pairs championship they couldn’t defend on when Frazier tested positive for COVID-19 before last year’s event. Knierim and Frazier are head and shoulders above the competition; they finished three points ahead of second place Emily Chan and Spencer Howe, who scored a 66.86, followed by Ellie Kam and Danny O’Shea at 65.75. But time isn’t on their side for the Winter Games three years away.
Knierim and Frazier’s future may be unknown, but they could be best suited pair to revive pairs skating representation internationally for the United States. Not since the 1988 Games in Calgary have a pair representing the U.S. medaled.
