The Barrow girls basketball team with head coach Derek Ahgeak celebrates after winning the Alaska 3A Basketball Tournament Saturday at Alaska Airlines Arena. The team with seven seniors has gone from summer basketball globetrotters to Alaska state champions.
“We hope to do that again,” Ahgeak said. “We have our sponsors and our fans. We do these summer travels through fundraising and the girls’ parents, they really step up. When you work in the summer it helps you develop. You really have to put in the work and these girls put in the work.” On the next possession she added a 3-pointer to extend the Barrow lead to 36-23 seemingly putting the game out of reach.By the time Ava Brady made a putback with 3:50 remaining, the score was 43-41.
