Technically, Marchessault is the first undrafted player to win the Conn Smythe since Wayne Gretzky in 1988. He’s the 10th undrafted player to have won the award, including six who made their debits after the firstThe reality is, Marchessault is the first true undrafted player ever to win the award. Gretzky wasn’t drafted into the NHL because he signed as a teenager in the WHA and was one of two players thewere able to protect when the leagues merged.
Despite his unorthodox journey here, Marchessault has played in all 88 of Vegas’ playoff games since its inaugural 2018 postseason.
