Learn how a New England musician and his mother are being honored in a big way

- Stan Greenberg may be blind, but he knows his way around his CD collection. He pops a disc into the player, and as The Shirelles belt out one of their hits, Greenberg smiles and nods with the beat."The second record I ever produced!" he remembered.

The South Burlington, Vt. man was a pop music producer and arranger in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, with several gold albums to show for his work with the Scepter Records label. His late mom, Florence, started that company, telling her son a blind man can get ahead in music as well as a sighted man."I was not allowed to have any excuses," Greenberg said.

Now the story of Florence Greenberg is a new Broadway musical playing at the landmark Broadhurst Theatre in New York City."Baby it's You!" uses smash hit songs from that era to show Greenberg as a pioneer. In those days, female executives were rare in the music industry."One of her characteristics was her tenacity," the proud son said.

Florence Greenberg worked with greats like Dionne Warwick, the Shirelles, and the Kingsmen. Stan Greenberg was a consultant for the Broadway show and was there for its premiere. He enjoyed the performance of the actor playing him."He sings better than I ever sang," Greenberg chuckled. Stan Greenberg hopes"Baby it's You!" helps a new generation discover the golden oldies he and his mom made famous, and that even fifteen years after her death, Florence Greenberg can still be an inspiration to underdogs."It's possible to follow your dreams," Greenberg said.
