A new report suggests that the traditional full Irish breakfast may be more nutritious than many trendy 'healthy' options. The study highlights the benefits of protein, complex carbohydrates, and healthy fats found in a full Irish compared to the sugar and simple carbohydrates often found in granola, yogurt, and cereal bars.

While many of us save a full Irish fry up for the weekend or as an occasional treat, you could be missing out! Both on taste and for the health benefits. In fact, according to experts, our old favourite could actually be more nutritious than many new and popular ‘healthy’ breakfast options like granola and yoghurt or cereal bars . Some of the ingredients in your full Irish are full of protein, vitamins and minerals and could even bolster brain health.

For example, the protein in sausages helps to satiate your appetite and keep you full for longer. Meanwhile, many so-called healthy, low-fat or organic breakfast options are commonly packed with sugar, corn syrup and fruit juice concentrate. These simple carbohydrates provide a short-lived energy boost but can leave us feeling sluggish and craving unhealthy treats. The report by travel firm Ski Vertigo, and based on a 2022 study in the Journal of Nutrition and Metabolism, found that cooked breakfasts boast complex carbohydrates and beneficial fats that fuel our bodies throughout the day. A moderately portioned fry using quality and unprocessed Irish ingredients could set you back around 600 calories, while granola could set you back over 400 calories for a 100g before you’ve even added the yoghurt. While some top-selling fruit and yoghurt bars have up to 220 calories per bar, meaning just three could total more calories than a plate of eggs, bacon and sausage. Not only that, but many of these ‘healthy’, breakfast foods can lead to a spike in blood sugar followed by an inevitable crash. The report advised: 'To fuel your body properly, the key is balancing macronutrients - protein, healthy fats and complex carbohydrates.' It added: 'A breakfast rich in these nutrients stabilises your blood sugar and keeps you full longer.' 'Granola bars, fruit-flavoured yoghurts and even some cereals boasting 'low-fat' or 'organic' labels. While these options might seem like smart choices, they can lead to a quick spike in blood sugar followed by an inevitable crash. 'This rollercoaster not only leaves you feeling sluggish but also primes your body for cravings and over-eating later in the day.
